Zakat & Finances

How your Zakat is handled, what the 100% policy means, and how receipts work.

Where does my Zakat go?

100% of your Zakat goes directly to verified Zakat-eligible recipients: individuals and families who meet the Islamic criteria (asnaf). Most of it reaches the fuqara (poor) and masakin (destitute) categories. Distributions are made through our field team in Cirebon, Indonesia, and occasionally through other vetted regional partners. Every distribution is photo-documented and reviewed by our treasurer.

What is the 100% policy, exactly?

When you designate a donation as Zakat, every single dollar reaches a recipient. Payment processing fees (Stripe charges ~2.9% + $0.30 per transaction) are covered by our separate general funds, so that Zakat donations are used entirely for Zakat operations. Your Zakat is never reduced by a fee. Our treasurer holds us to that, reconciling Zakat receipts against distributions every month.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. Jabal Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Public Charity (EIN #92-3844405) incorporated in Arizona. All donations, including Zakat, Sadaqah, and general giving, are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by US law. An email receipt goes out automatically for every donation. For large gifts or end-of-year tax letters, write to us at info@jabalfoundation.org.

How do I get a donation receipt?

A receipt is emailed automatically right after each donation. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder. For a consolidated annual giving statement for tax purposes, email info@jabalfoundation.org with your name and the approximate dates you gave. We'll send the letter within 5 business days.

Can I donate Sadaqah separately from Zakat?

Yes. At checkout you can designate your gift as Zakat (obligatory, distributed strictly to asnaf), Sadaqah (voluntary, more flexible), or Lillah (for the sake of Allah, used for operational costs and program expenses). You can also give without designating anything, and we will put it where the need is greatest.

Programs & Impact

Who runs our field work, what each program does, and how recipients are verified.

What is Ummah Corps?

Ummah Corps is our education program in Cirebon, Indonesia. It teaches four subjects to underserved youth: computer literacy, English language, financial mathematics, and Silat martial arts. 47 students are enrolled at the moment. Classes run throughout the week under qualified local instructors. Running the whole program costs roughly $880 a month, or about $19 per student.

How do you verify that Zakat recipients are eligible?

We follow a five-step verification process: (1) standardized intake form, (2) income and household assessment, (3) cross-reference with community knowledge, (4) review by a local imam or Islamic scholar for questionable cases, (5) photo-documented distribution receipt. Recipients are re-verified annually. When a family's finances improve we take them off the list, and that is a good day.

Are the Gaza programs still running?

Our Gaza meals program is running. We fund cooked meals through vetted local partners already operating inside Gaza. We did pause Gaza fundraising during an earlier phase of the war, when access restrictions meant we could not verify that distributions were reaching people, and we said so at the time. That remains the standard: if verification becomes impossible again, we will close the fund and say why.

What is the Waqf?

The Jabal Legacy Waqf is a permanent endowment fund. Your principal is preserved forever, while the investment returns are distributed for charitable purposes year after year. It is administered through AfterFund.co. A Waqf gift is Sadaqah Jariyah: charity that keeps helping people, and keeps earning reward for you, long after you are gone.
