Zakat al-Fitr · Fitrana

Paid before the prayer, and provably so.

Zakat al-Fitr is small, obligatory, and strictly timed. It has to be in the hands of the poor before the Eid prayer, and most charities have no way of showing you they made that deadline. Our tracker records the date the money actually cleared.

The obligation

What Zakat al-Fitr actually is.

It is a separate obligation from Zakat al-māl, the annual 2.5% on wealth. This one is per person, not per fortune, and the poorest household that has food for Eid still owes it.

◉

Who owes it

Every Muslim who has food beyond their household's needs for the day and night of Eid. The head of a household normally pays on behalf of everyone in it, including children and dependants.

◷

When it is due

It must reach an eligible recipient before the Eid prayer. Most scholars allow paying it during Ramadan so the distribution can be arranged in time, and paying it late without excuse means it no longer counts as Zakat al-Fitr.

⬡

How much

One ṣāʿ of the local staple food per person, roughly three kilograms. We set the cash equivalent each Ramadan from local market prices in the region receiving it, and the figure is confirmed before you pay.

✦

Who receives it

The poor and the destitute, the same fuqarā and masākīn we verify for our general Zakat distribution. It is given as food or as its value, depending on what is most useful where it lands.

Rulings differ between schools on the detail, particularly on paying the cash value rather than the food itself. If you follow a position that requires food specifically, tell us and we will make sure yours is distributed that way.

Proof of timing

A deadline you can audit.

We do not mark your gift fulfilled until the money has cleared to the field. For an obligation that expires at the Eid prayer, the date on that record is the thing you actually need.

01

Pay during Ramadan

Give early in the month if you can. The earlier the funds are with us, the more comfortably the field team can buy and stage the food.

02

We buy locally, before Eid

The staple is bought in the receiving community, which keeps the money in the local economy and avoids shipping food across the world.

03

Distributed before the prayer

Distribution is scheduled to complete before the Eid prayer in the recipients' own time zone, not ours.

04

You get the timestamp

Your tracker records the date the disbursement actually cleared, so you hold evidence that the obligation was met inside its window.

Settle it early this Ramadan.

Pay for your whole household in one go. We will confirm the per-person amount for the year before you are charged, and 100% of it reaches a recipient.
